WINNING WAYS CONTINUE FOR U19 & U16 BASKETBALL TEAMS
St. Dominic’s, Cabra travelled to the Boyneside on Friday with two basketball teams, to try and stop unbeaten runs by two of Our Lady’s teams. The first team out was the U16, B team, playing in division 2. To date this team have had some impressive wins and have their eyes firmly on a quarter final place before Christmas. Captain, Benita Assoua opened the scoring for her team, but it was Katie McCabe’s running abilities that made the difference in the 1st quarter as she ran in the next 5 lay-ups, leaving her team 12 – 4 up at the first break. In quarter two, Erin Lane was showing her abilities as a superb point guard as she controlled the offence and scored 7 points for her team. Lois O’Hare, Keelin O’Reilly and Carla Grennan did trojan work in defence and managed to keep Cabra scoreless. The half time score 23 – 4 in favor of the home side. The 3rd quarter was a scrappy one with Our Lady’s making unforced errors and allowing the visitors to out score them 7 points to 6. Caoimhe Kearney and Bronagh Lane steadied the ship in the last quarter and they had a comfortable win by the time the final whistle went, 37 – 13. Once again, Katie McCabe was top scorer for her side, on 14 points.

The U19, Senior B team are also unbeaten in the league to date and they were next to take to the court. Laura Rice was instrumental in their 8 – 2 lead in the first quarter, hitting some excellent free throws having been fouled several times going to the basket. They led 15 – 3 at half time. Lindsey Eriamietor was unstoppable in the second half scoring 11 points for her team. Lynn Victory had some excellent steels and with persistent fouling by Cabra, was cool and calm on the free throw line. They ran out easy winners, 43 – 9 to continue their successful path to the quarter finals. However, they will meet stronger opposition and will need to convert more lay-ups, having missed 16 and score more from outfield (scoring 7 for 41).

On Thursday the U19, Senior B team and the U16, Cadette C team were due to play Maryfield College, from Drumcondra but they conceded walkovers to both teams the day before.
