On Monday two teams from Our Lady’s College were contesting semi-finals in the S.S.A. League.
The neutral venue was A.LS.A.A. Sports Complex, at Dublin Airport, for both the U19 Senior B team and the U16 Cadette A side.
The Cadette U16, Division 1 team was first to play and their opposition was Our Lady of Mercy, Drimnagh. The odds were stacked against us in this one as Drimnagh had previously comprehensively beaten this squad. With two strong ‘Club’ players, one playing at National League level, Our Lady’s found themselves 9 points down in the first quarter, having failed to register a single point. Karolina Slionskyte got her team on the score as did the ever improving Kaylee Sullivan. With 12 points separating the teams going into quarter three, it was a mammoth task. The team, to their credit, never gave up on the task, but were eventual losers on an 11 – 33 score line. Drimnagh’s Club players scored 27 points between them. Making the semi-final for this team is a testament to their commitment at training and games. Playing at this level has definitely improved them and given them a taste of basketball life in the ‘faster lane’. Onwards and upwards for next season.

The U19, Senior B team was next to play in the division 2, semi-final. Their opposition was Santa Sabina from Sutton. As they had not previously met little was known about them. Captain, Kiara Bautista got her side off to an early lead, scoring from the free throw line. Sarah Flood added a basket to this, but Sabina led 8 – 3 at the first break and increased their lead to 14 – 6 by half time. Despite playing well, the Boynesiders were lacking confidence under their own basket and missed easy rebounds and lay-ups. Santa Sabina powered on in the second half and won out 30 – 11.

On Friday the second year Junior Premier Team travelled to Maynooth to play Maynooth Post Primary. It was a slow start by both teams, who boast a number of Club players, Maynooth had 5 and Our Lady’s have 10. The visitors were 2 – 4 down at end of quarter. A strong second quarter, with Ciara NicCriosta scoring 3 points, and Ruby Matthews and Ava Prendergast chipping in with 2 points apiece, the side led 9 – 6 at the half time interval. However, Maynooth were not going to roll over on their own turf and put in a stellar third quarter scoring 8 points, while keeping Our Lady’s scoreless. Despite baskets from Abby Rice and Garoa Villaverde in the final quarter they found themselves on the wrong side of a 16 – 13 score line.
