Small But Mighty 2nd Year B Team Surge On

2nd Year B Team 2019-20

The 2nd Year B basketball team at Our Lady’s College might be small in numbers but they are mighty in fighting spirit.  Playing most of this season with only 9 players, they have consistently delivered and are one game away from qualifying for the quarter finals.  They travelled to Sandymount last week to take on St. Raphaela’s.  Liana Karkle opened their account and they never really looked back.  Captain, Leisha Archbold led this one from the 1st quarter, netting herself 6 of their 10 points.  By half time they led 18-4.  Newcomer this season, Abbey McDonnell, came into her own, scoring some excellent lay-ups.  The team added another 24 points in the 2nd half, while the home side only managed a single basket.  The final score of 42-6, puts them right into contention for the upcoming quarter finals. Archbold finishing as top scorer, with a season high of 14 points.

TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Leisha Archbold 14; Queen Agunloye 4; Emily Fitzpatrick 8; Liana Karkle 2; Aine Marron; Abbey McDonnell 6; Sarah McGrath 2; Sophie McNally 6 and Kuhle Mdlalo.

The 1st Year B side also travelled to Sandymount and after cheering on the 2nd years, they took to the floor.  Again, this was another strong performance by this young side.  A quiet start saw them only score 3 points, courtesy of Kathlyn Conroy and Laura McGinnity.  However, quarter two was a different affair as they scored 12 points.  Emma McGrane’s accuracy from the free-throw line was excellent.  Abi McCarthan-Smith was very strong in offense scoring some nice lay-ups.  The side led 15-4 at the half time interval.  The second half took on a similar look, and with Alex Healy unstoppable under the boards, the team went on to win 35-9.  Healy and Abi McCartan-Smith both finishing with 8 points each.

TEAM & SCORES: Joy Chuks 2; Kathlyn Conroy 3; Arianne Flynn; Eva Fox 1; Elsa Goodwin; Emma Gorman; Lana Hanratty 2; Alex Healy 8; Kelly-Anne Kinsella 4; Karina Lygmalyte; Abi McCartan-Smith 8; Ashleigh McCartan-Smith; Laura McGinnity 4; Emma McGrane 3; Aoibheann Steenson; Hollie Stone and Erika Villaverde.

The last team to play during the week was the 2nd Year Junior A side.  Playing in Division 1, they have struggled to date to find form.  St. Louis High School, from Rathmines, came Boyneside, but only arrived with 8 players.  Unfortunately, due to the 2nd year rules, you must have a minimum of 10 players, so they had to concede the game.  A challenge match was played, and they got a great start, leading 4-0 at the break.  However, it was 5 points each at the half time interval.  Jessica Carr and Eabha Woods came out of the blocks flying in the 3rd quarter and turned the game on its head.  They led 13-7 going into the final 7 minutes.  Point guard, Sheila Whyte was also having a great game, with some superb defence and netting herself 6 points for her efforts.  The side recorded their first victory, 26-13 and this win will boost their confidence no end.

TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Jessica Carron; Jessica Carr 7; Sadhbh Clinton; Katie Dawson; Erin Kearney 2; Evie Kirwan 2; Amelia Lawrence 5; Kate McDermott 2; Kiera McWilliams; Joy Mooney; Sheila Whyte 6 and Eabha Woods 2.
