The Junior Certificate Course is a three year course consisting of basic Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Biology is the study of life and includes a study of both plant and animal life. Chemistry studies the atom, chemical reactions, acids and bases and topics like acid rain and water hardness. Physics involves the study of electricity, magnetism, heat, light and sound. It is possible to take up Physics and Biology for the first time in Fifth year, however, it is difficult to take Chemistry for the Leaving Certificate if it hasn’t been studied at Junior certificate level.
How will Science be useful to me?
Many of the skills you learn while studying science such as problem solving and investigation skills are very useful outside of school and will be of use to you in whatever job you choose to do. In third level there are many different types of science courses on offer and many different careers open to science students. One or two science subjects will be a requirement for many science/medical based courses.
These include becoming a: pharmacist, radiographer, doctor, dentist, technician, psychologist, astronomer, teacher, vet and researcher.
What is the Science Junior Certificate exam like?
In Junior Certificate Science you will be examined in two ways:
• coursework – during the three years of the Junior Certificate you report on the investigations that you carry out in class. These reports count for 35% of your Junior Certificate marks
• written examination – you will answer questions on the science topics that you have studied and on the skills (e.g. science investigation skills) that you have developed.
Junior Cycle Science
The Junior Certificate course is a three year course consisting of biology, chemistry and physics.
Biology is the study of life and includes a study of both plant and animal life, microbiology and ecology.
Chemistry includes the study of the atom, chemical reactions, acids and bases, air, water and metals.
Physics includes the study of electricity, magnetism, measurement, forces, heat, light and sound.
All students can study biology at Leaving Certificate without having studied Junior Certificate science.Junior Certificate science provides a very useful introduction to Leaving Certificate science subjects.
Students may, with their teacher`s approval, take physics or chemistry without the foundation of Junior Certificate science.
A science subject is desirable or necessary for many career paths. These include engineering, medically orientated careers (nursing, medicine, physiotherapy and veterinary medicine, radiography), computing, pharmaceutical and laboratory work.
Science Experiment Video Clip
The clip below shows the reaction of potassium with water. The videoclip was made in Our Lady`s College by a third year science student, Aoife Archibald, using her phone. She then edited it, added titles and added a page at the end.
