Premier Line up for Basketball Teams in Finals
First week back after the Christmas break and the U16, Premier division team was straight back into action. As most of this team play their Club basketball with Sparks Basketball Club, they had done some training over the break. They had a semi-final match against Santa Sabina, of Sutton and their task was to join the U19A and the U16B teams who had already qualified for the finals.
The game was in ALSAA, a neutral venue for both schools. Both teams started slowly and matched each other for baskets in the first quarter, a low 4 points each scored. However, with only 2 out of 12 shots made and no lay-up converted the Boynesiders would have to improve if they were to win this one. Ruby Matthews got their first score in the next quarter, and with Nikola Busa adding 2 from the free-throw and one from the floor, the team led 14-8 at the half time interval. The third quarter saw the sides again share the spoils, on 10 points apiece. Abby Rice picked off some nice rebounds and Captain, Ava Briscoe was precise from the floor. With only 6 points separating the sides, 24-18 it was all to play for going into the final quarter. They kept the best till last, running their fast break with precision. Their defence was key as they kept Santa Sabina to just 5 points and scored 12 themselves. Nikola Busa impressed throughout and finished as top scorer on 12 points. The score line of 36 – 23 earned them a place in the much-coveted final. This team contested the 2nd Year, Premier Division final year last season and will be hoping to repeat the success they tasted then.
