Mixed Fortunes as Basketball Teams Qualify for Next Stages
It was a crucial week for most of the 1st and 2nd year basketball teams at Our Lady’s College, with a place in either the quarter or semi finals at stake. On Monday St. Raphaela’s from Stillorgan travelled to the College with two 1st year teams. The Minor B side was first out, and they needed the win to be sure of qualification for quarter finals. A poor first quarter saw the side fail to score, Raphaela’s up by 8. Their defence picked up in the 2nd keeping the visitors to 4 points, but only managed to score a single basket themselves, courtesy of Cliona McKernan. McKernan went on to score a further 4 points in the match, but her side lost out 9 – 24. They will now have to wait and see if they have done enough to qualify for quarter finals.

The 1st year Minor A team was next out on court. Going into the game they were unbeaten and one more win would guarantee them qualification. Raphaela’s had a Spanish player in the squad and she dominated the 1st quarter scoring 6 of their 8 points, while the home side only succeeded in scoring 3 points, Niamh Byrne, and Rebecca Tully the providers. Their 2nd quarter players scored a further 4 points and got the team back into the match, the difference at the half time just 3 points. However, with the re-introduction of the Spaniard the side struggled to score, while Raphaela’s were scoring at will. Unbeaten in the league to date, they were already assured of a place in the top four. This match would decide whether they remained on top or not. They first quarter was not the start they wanted and found themselves 1 – 8 down, Erin Lane managing to get one from the free-throw line. Benita Assoua getting into foul trouble early, did not help their cause. The next five players on court coped better with the smaller court and turned things around. They kept Cabra scoreless and scored 9 points themselves. Point guard, Katie McCabe hitting 6. The teams traded baskets in the final two quarters. Some excellent defence, particularly in the final 15 seconds, forced Dominic’s to turn over the ball under their own basket. They held onto the pocession and won this one 16 – 15.
