Introduction

We, as English practitioners, are committed to the teaching of English to the very highest standards, cognisant of the fact that the skills learned in English have an application throughout the curriculum and beyond it into the world of life and work.

We promote an all school approach to the enhancement of literacy in all its forms. 

We are dedicated to the provision of many and varied opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing in the learning and thinking processes. Experiences in the English classroom should emphasise the development of a range of skills in a variety of domains: personal, social and cultural.

English

Junior Cycle

The general aim of education is to contribute towards the development of all aspects of the individual, including aesthetic, creative, critical, cultural, emotional, intellectual, moral, physical, political, social and spiritual, for personal and family life, for working life, for living in the community and for leisure. English at Junior Cycle level seeks to provide the experiences which will achieve this aim.

At Junior Level we cover a range of material including:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Compositions
  • Functional Writing
  • Media Studies
  • Drama
  • Fiction
  • Poetry

Transition Year

English studied during Transition Year seeks to build on work done for the Junior Certificate in order to enhance ability for the Senior Cycle. The provision of English in Transition Year is modular, with students completing at least two modules. This allows students the opportunity to study diverse literature outside the tradition curriculum. Assessment of this work is generally done through assignments, projects, oral presentations and an End of Year exam.

Modules currently studied:

  • Poetry and Song Module
  • Art and the Holocaust Module
  • Film Studies Module
  • Creative Writing
  • Journalism

Senior Cycle

At Leaving Cert level, the English course aims to develop:

  • The ability to critically analyse information, as preparation for the responsibilities and challenges of adult life
  • A respect and appreciation for language used accurately and appropriately, and a competence in a wide range of oral and written language skills;
  • An awareness of the value of literature for widening horizons, for enhancing their sense of cultural identity, and most of all for the life- long pleasure of reading.

At Leaving Cert Level we cover a range of material including:

  • Comprehension and Composition in the five main areas of language: Information, Argument, Persuasion, Narration and the Aesthetic.
  • A Single Text Study
  • A Comparative Study [ that may incorporate film, drama and fiction]
  • A wide selection of Poetry

Resources

Our Lady’s College is very proud of its well- stocked library which features a broad mix of classical literature and contemporary fiction to suit a wide variety of tastes. The library also boasts a wide range of reference material catering for all subjects in the curriculum. There is a very active book club in the school and there are many areas conducive to personal reading.

 Students of English in Our Lady’s College have many opportunities to become involved in a range of extra- curricular activities which will develop confidence in public speaking, debating and self- expression [competitions, drama and performance].

Students also have access to the school’s computer labs which facilitate project research and preparation for English presentations. All English classrooms are equipped with a diverse range of media including Interactive Whiteboards, Apple TVs and Data Projectors.
