Biology is the study of life.

Students will cover topics which include food, ecology, genetics, photosynthesis and respiration. They will learn about different organisms including plants, bacteria, fungi, viruses and the details of the various systems in the human body. 27 compulsory experiments must be carried out and written up by students.

Students gain a knowledge and understanding of biological facts, terms, principles, concepts, relationships and experimental techniques, including practical laboratory skills.

Such skills include:

• an ability to carry out practical work, laboratory work and fieldwork activities safely and effectively
• an ability to record and interpret biological data.

The course is designed to make students more aware of the impact of biology in everyday life - to link to contemporary issues e.g. DNA profiling or fingerprinting, diseases and their treatments, healthy diets.

Junior Certificate science is not required to do Leaving Certificate biology but it is an advantage.
