European Exchange Students
Greenhills receives students from all over the world. In recent years we have enrolled many interational students from Africa and eastern Europe so that Greenhills is now a multicultural school embracing students from all corners of the globe. We continue to have a strong commitment to furthering links with students in other countries in Europe and around the world.
We host students from various European countries each year on a short-term basis. This year we have on our roll students from Austria, France, Belguim, Germany and three from the USA. Most students join us for a year or two in Leaving Cert cycle and some sit their Leaving Certificate in Greenhills. We have a particularly strong tradition of receiving Spanish students many of whom come to us through the "Education through English" organisation. The girls from countries outside Ireland have, over the years, added enormously to the cultural and educational richness of our school.
A very important feature of our European link is the continental tour that accommodates upwards of 100 of our students every 2 years during the mid-term break in October-November. This is a major experience in the lives of our students and is a cross-curricular event that embraces historical, geographical and cultural aspects of the areas visited. The 2007 tour was a skiing trip to Austria. This new venture caused a great stir among students. The school choir and orchestra also does a European tour every 2 years. In October 2004 they visited Switzerland.
Every year girls from Greenhills and their teachers participate in student exchanges with schools in Solingen near Dusseldorf in Germany and Douvres in northern France. Strong ties have been built over the years with our partner schools so that these exchanges are normal events in the school year.
A recent development has been the advent of TYO work experience exchange whereby Greenhills TYO students do their 2-week work experience in the Solingen area and their German partners come to Ireland for work experience and are accommodated by the families of their Irish partners.
