Highs & Lows for 1st & 2nd Year Basketballers
Both 1st year basketball teams were back in action this week, travelling to Stillorgan to take on St Raphaela’s. The B side was first to the floor taking on their C team in division 2. The game was very slow to start with both teams missing many opportunities under the baskets. Our Lady’s only points coming from Sadhbh Clinton, from the free-throw line. Quarter two was a bit more lively as Raphaela’s outscored their visitors 8 points to 6, leaving the scores tied at 8 points each heading into the 3rd quarter. The Boynesiders got to grips with the game, scoring 11 points in the 2nd half while keeping the home side scoreless. Casey Nugent ran in a nice lay-up to finish on the game buzzar. The final score 19 – 8, Queen Agunloye was their top scorer on 5 points.
TEAM& SCORES: Queen Agunloye 5; Leisha Archbold; Jessica Carr 2; Sadhbh Clinton 2; Katie Connolly 2; Emma Farrell (injured); Jessica Hevey; Evie Kirwan (injured); Deimena Makauskaite 2; Aine Marron; Sarah McGrath; Kuhle Mdlalo 2 and Casey Nugent 4.
The second game was a completely different story. Our Lady’s fired out of the blocks and ran in 10 points without reply. Sheila Whyte was particularly impressive, controlling the point position and running in 3 baskets, while Kate McDermott and Katie Dawson also contributed. The second quarter was devastating for St. Raphaela’s, as the next five players to the floor continued on with the onslaught. Again, the point guard in this quarter, Jessica Carron was tremendous, scoring 12 points; Joy Mooney contributed 6 as the team scored 26 unanswered points. St. Raphaela’s eventually scored 4 points in the third quarter, but that was as good as it got. The finals score of 62 – 4 summing up a very mis-matched game. Most Valuable Player in the game was Jessica Carron, scoring an amazing 22 points.
TEAM& SCORES: Heather Breen 4; Leah Brodigan 2; Jessica Carron 22; Katie Dawson 2; Molly Dixon 6; Emily Fitzpatrick; Armela Hotaj; Liana Karkle 2; Erin Kearney; Katie McDermott 2; Sophie McNally; Kiera McWilliams; Joy Mooney 6; Clodagh O’Connor 2; Sheila Whyte 8 and Eabha Woods 6.
The 2nd year A team were also in action, and travelled to Chapelizod the following day, to play Mt. Sackville. This team play in the Premier division, where there is no restriction on the number of Club players a team can have. Unfortunately, we were completely outclassed in this one, as Mt. Sackville had 8 Club players, three of whom also play on the Dublin panel. Our Lady’s found themselves 1-12 down and 23-3 down at the half time break. They kept plugging away and finished out the game, having scored 16 points to Sackvilles 49. It is hard to see (hopefully) another team stronger than this, and the ‘College’ must bounce back and continue with their league campaign.
TEAM& SCORES: Captain, Niamh Burke 4; Uyi Aghavbere; Subomi Dele; Loveth Edonwande 4; Ella Flanagan 2; Sarah Jane Hughes (absent); Amelia Lawrence; Ellen McCarthy; Kate McGuigan; Cliona McKernan 2; Nicole Tully 4 and Jowita Wyka.
