GREENHILLS 5K
The first Greenhills 5k was held in bright sunshine Sunday morning on 12th November, 2017 and was proclaimed an unqualified success.
The chip-timed course started and finished at the school gates, winding out along the river road towards Beaulieu and returning the same way.
Olympic marathoner Valdas Dopolskas was first home, floating up the hill to the finish in 15:23. One of our top locals, Brian McCluskey of North East Runners finished second in 16:10.
Among the ladies, there was a great cheer for Greenhills PE teacher Miss (Stephanie) Byrne when she crossed the line as winning female in an excellent time of 19:34. Boyne AC athlete Rebecca Carolan was second in 21:10.
Pat O’Grady from Drogheda and District AC scooped the first over-50 male prize. He completed the course in fifth place overall in 17:31 making his Greenhills daughters Kate and Una proud. Josephine Killeen took the female over-50 title.
First Greenhills student home was Roisín Kane in 22:09 and first U16 non-Greenhills student was local girl Kate O’Reilly in 22:08 in a great battle to the finish.
All 350 or so entrants received a beautiful technical t-shirt by which to remember the day and there was a generous after-race party hosted by the Parents Council in the gym afterwards.
Proud Principal, Geraldine Mulvihill voiced everyone’s thoughts during prizegiving when she thanked the wonderful organising committee and sponsors and promised a return to what was a superbly run event with an incredible atmosphere for next year.
FLAG DAY, 6 WEEK DRAW and CHURCH GATE COLLECTION
We hold our Flag Day in September each year, our 6 week draw in the run up to Easter and our Church Gate Collection in March. All of these fundraisers are very important for the assistance it allows us to provide to the improvements to the school for the benefit of our daughters. The 6 week draw is our main fundraiser and so it is particularly important that every student endeavours to contribute to this. Full cards are priced at €60 or €10 per week for the 6 weeks of the draw. Each line is priced at €2 per week. There are prizes galore not only for the winners, but the sellers of full cards, full lines, best class, best year etc and the draw culminates in an Easter Raffle which is held in the gym on the Friday of the Easter Holidays at which we raffle easter eggs, hampers etc. The girls seem to love this raffle, it generates great excitement!
In addition to the main fundraisers, we like to do something of a more social nature each year. In the past we have held a Christmas Floral Demonstration, a Christmas Cookery Demonstration and Christmas Carol Services in the Augustinian with special guest Donal Lunny. The primary purpose of these events is to bring the wider school community together. Parents have an opportunity to get together socially and to meet other parents and teachers whilst having a good night out. Each event held so far has been very successful, proving that given the opportunity, parents welcome the chance to get together in an informal setting.
Sponsorship of Prizes
In 2012 the Parents Council wrote to parents asking them for the first time to consider donating prizes that could be used for fundraising events. We received a very good response from parents, some of them local business people, to our request. These prizes have been used for raffles on several occasions and have helped us raise hundreds of Euros. Thank you all for your generosity. Please note that we continue to accept prizes in this way.
The Christmas Carol Services held in the Augustinian Church, the brainchild of the Parents` Council, was a resounding success thanks to the hard work and effort of the teachers and students and again it is anticipated that this event will be repeated in future years having raised almost €2000 for the school.
Thank you to everyone who gave their support by buying Pantomime tickets through the school, and helped us to bolster our funds. Our thanks also to the Pantomime Society for giving us the opportunity to raise funds. We would also like to congratulate them on a great production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
