FOUR BECOME TWO AS BASKETBALL TEAMS CLASH IN SEMI-FINALS

U16 Div 2 Semi-Final, U16B V U16C

It was a busy week at Our Lady’s College leading up to the Christmas break.  Not only was there Winter Wonderland and Carol Service but also the small matter of two very important basketball semi-finals to be played.  In the U16, division 2 our B team had been drawn against our C team and a similar fate befell the U19 teams.

There was an air of anticipation but nervousness on the day as none of the four teams were relishing the thought of playing each other.  These teams train together twice a week and aside from being familiar with each other are also good friends.  The U16 teams played first and with point guard, Katie McCabe injured, Erin Lane started and wasted no opportunity in showing why she should make the starting five in the final, scoring 6 points in the first quarter.  The B side up 22 – 0 at the first break.  The C team struggled to keep up with the pace of the game and missed opportunities came back to haunt them.  Caoimhe Kearney from the B team was in sparkling form, scoring a game high 14 points as she tried to match Erin Lane, who just tipped her for top scorer on 15 points.  The final score a resounding victory for the B side, 57 – 7.  They will now play in the Finals at the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght on Thursday 17th January 2019.

In the U19, division 2 league the A side finished unbeaten in Section A and the B team finished 2nd in Section B resulting in they too meeting in a semi-final.  It took a few minutes for this one to warm up but by quarter one end the A side led 10 – 4, with Oyin Adelegan scoring 6.  They plugged away at the score board, notching up another 8 points in the 2nd quarter, finishing 18 – 9 up at the half time interval.  The B side got more opportunities in the 3rd, with Catherine Grey once again leading the charge.  However, they could not bridge the gap, and the final score of 34 points to 16, saw the A side also heading to the N.B.A. in January.
