Dramatic End to 1st Year Basketball League Table

1st Year A Team 2019-20

There was only one basketball game left to be played before the mid-term break. The 1st Year A team would take on St. Mary’s, Glasnevin.  The ‘College’ girls were sitting pretty, unbeaten at the top of the league, and just had to win to avoid playing the ‘B’ team in the semi-finals.  Both St. Mary’s and Maryfield College, Drumcondra had one loss each and were vying for that coveted 2nd spot.  The 1st quarter was a tough on, being very physical and the referees allowing a lot of contact, which the smaller players did not cope with.  The score still 0-0 at break one.  St. Mary’s were first out of the blocks in quarter two.  The Boynesiders failing to score lay-up and rebounds and could not deal with the height of one of the opposition.  This player scored 8 points in this quarter, leaving the home side trailing 0-8.  This was unfamiliar territory for the girls, but they got their game going somewhat in the 3rd quarter.  Lily Sheeran was the first to notch up a score, followed by Rama Harrak.  They also kept Glasnevin scoreless in this quarter.  4-8 going into the final quarter and all was still to play for.  The tenacious Eili Ryan was switched onto their much taller player but this did not phase the small guard.  Aoife Kane and Ryan got themselves on the score sheet and there was a point in the game.  Down the stretch the home side were in foul trouble and put Glasnevin on the line a few times.  A fine rebound by Ella Carter brought the game back to a single point, and with one free throw to come the game could have been tied.  However, the shot was unsuccessful.  A further 2 free throws by their top scorer put 3 points between the sides.  With 11 seconds on the clock Anitah Kembo scored a basket and stole the ball back on the inbound.  The side did get another shot off, but this was not their day and they lost this epic battle, 11-12.  Glasnevin’s tall post player scoring 10 of her teams 12 points.

This left a three-way tie at the top of Section A.  After some mathematics on score difference it was confirmed that Our Lady’s had finished in top spot, St. Mary’s in 2nd and Maryfield College being eliminated by a single point.  This was the news Coach Denise Rice was hoping for as the two 1st year teams will now avoid each other in the top fours.

Semi-finals to be played by 5th March 2020 and the line-up will be Our Lady’s College A play St. Raphaela’s, Stillorgan: Our Lady’s College B play St. Mary’s, Glasnevin.  The Junior A team are straight through to Finals while the Junior B team are awaiting the opposition in their semi-final.
