Disappointment for 1st Year Basketballers.
The 1st Year A team was all set for their first basketball match during the week. Playing in Division 2, their opponents were St. Mary’s, Killester and the team were nervous and excited about playing. However, the opponents failed to show and after a phone call it was discovered they were in their home gym, also warming up. It was a genuine mistake on their part, and they conceded the points on the morning. The 1st and 2nd year teams will kick off their League Campaign in earnest in January 2020.
Team: Sarah Bäck-Herke; Ella Carter; Aisling Crinion; Nicole Flynn; Madison Gaffney; Ali Gardiner; Rama Harrak; Yasmin Ibrahim; Aoife Kane; Anitah Kembo; Isabelle Matthews; Leah McElearney; Catherine Moore; Sarah Red; Eile Ryan and Lily Sheeran.
The final two matches before the Christmas break took place on Thursday. Santa Sabina travelled from Sutton with their U16 & U19 Premier Teams. The U16’s played first. This division has suffered with several teams pulling out, and some not being able to fulfil all their fixtures. As a result, the ‘College’ team was lacking match practice and it showed in the game. Sabina were first to score and despite 5 points from the Tully twins, Nicole & Rebecca, the side trailed 5-6 at the break. The introduction of Captain, Loveth Edomwande in the 2nd quarter, livened things up and the home side led 15-10 at the half time interval. Santa Sabina came out fighting in the 3rd quarter, and their defence was superb as the Boynesiders rushed their offences and took poor shot selections. Despite only scoring a basket in this quarter, they led by the slimmest of margins, 17-16 going into the final quarter. They found themselves 8 points down with 3 minutes remaining. Again, Edomwande stepped up before bowing out with an ankle injury, leaving her team 4 points adrift with 36 seconds on the clock. Cliona McKernan scored an excellent rebound to put a basket between them. Point guard Sarah Jane Hughes had processing with 20 seconds left when their point guard knocked her to the floor and stole the ball to score an uncontested lay-up. This happened in front of the referee, who made no call. The lack of a call here, possibly cost the team levelling the game, and perhaps going on to win. Time expired before the team had time to react, and the score of 26-30 left the team and Coach very disappointed with both the result and the performance of the referees on the day, both of whom spent a number of occasions on the floor arguing with each other. On the plus side, this team will play in the semi-final after Christmas, as they await now to see whom they will be drawn against.
TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Loveth Edomwande 16; Niamh Byrne; Subomi Dele; Jessica Duggan (not available); Ella Flanagan (not available); Keelin Foley; Sarah Jane Hughes 2; Kate McGuigan; Cliona McKernan 2; Neda Totilaite; Nicole Tully 3; Rebecca Tully 3 and Jowita Wyka.
The U19 Premier team would close out the season, this side of Christmas, and a win would keep them top of their league and in pole position going into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the team only had 7 players available to play so they needed to be very disciplined in their defence to see the game out. Teams traded baskets in the 1st quarter, the home side just slightly ahead, 8-6 at the break. Zoe Gardiner was particularly impressive. They shut Santa Sabina down in the next two quarters, keeping them to just 2 baskets. The lead now 27-10. The visitors had no come back, and they conceded this one 38-17 to the Boynesiders. They too now await the semi-final opponents.
This rounds off what has been a tremendous League Campaign for all teams, with the U19A, U19B, U16A and U16B teams all qualifying for semi-finals, and an outside chance of the U19C team also qualifying.
