Curriculum Overview
We offer students a wide choice of subjects
In first year every student studies : Irish, English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Religious Education and Wellbeing (P.E. (Physical Education), S.P.H.E. (Social Personal & Health Education) and C.S.P.E. (Civic, Social & Political Education)).
Before entry first years choose a modern language – French or German, and they choose three out of five subjects from Music, Art, Home Economics, Technical Graphics and Business Studies.
In 2nd and 3rd year the number of subjects studied for Junior Cert exam reduces to 9 along with Wellbeing.
In Leaving Certificate students study 7 exam subjects along with Physical Education, S.P.H.E & Pastoral Care and Religion – if not already chosen as a Leaving Cert exam subject.
In choosing subjects students are given as much freedom as possible but they are guided in their choice by subject teachers and guidance counsellors.
Our system in Greenhills is a setting as opposed to a streaming system – this system allows each student to work to her best potential. Thus, from second year onwards each student may study most subjects at the level best suited to her abilities and needs – higher, ordinary or foundation.
New specifications for subjects at Junior Cycle allows for subjects to be studied at a common level except Irish, English and Maths – these can be studied at higher or ordinary level.
At all times students are encouraged to work at the highest level that suits their ability.
Information technology is integrated as much as possible into all subjects on the curriculum in keeping with the strategy recommended by the Department of Education and Science.
