Our Lady’s College Greenhills School Choir
The choir is a special part of our school community. It is inclusive and welcoming to all members of the student body, regardless of whether they do music as a subject or not. The choir has participated at many events throughout the years such as Carol Services, trips around the country, our own open night, the Fleadh Cheoil and on the steps of St. Peter’s church for Suicide Awareness Day. We meet twice weekly, Monday and Wednesday at lunchtimes.
Every year the choir, along with the orchestra and trad group, perform a carol service in our school gym, and every two years in the Augustinian church in Drogheda. We perform lots of Christmas songs, such as a lovely song written by one of our music teachers Mr. Liam Reilly. It’s a central part of the school community at Christmas, and it acts as a great uplifting experience for all involved.
2019 Cork Trip
In 2019 we got the opportunity to go to Cork along with the orchestra and perform in the Augustinian Church in the city. Cork was a great experience from getting to stay in an accommodating hostel to being stuck on a bus in the snow on the way home! These trips away also act as a bonding opportunity for the music department and bring everyone closer together.
2017 Limerick Trip
In 2017 our choir and orchestra had the honor to play in the Augustinian Church in Limerick. The girls had a great time making new friends and singing a great set of songs. The performance was broadcast on the churches live feed so all the parents could watch at home. It was a wonderful experience.
Every year the choir perform with the orchestra at open night, this performance is a showcase of the choirs work throughout the school year and is a chance to impress incoming first years. This year we performed “Love can build a bridge”, “The Prayer” and “Baby I love you”.
School Stars 2019
In November of 2019, the school choir had the honour of taking part in the TLT’s School Stars competition. We sang ‘Love Can Build a Bridge’ along with our school orchestra for the Semi-Finals on the 22nd of November. We advanced to the Finals and performed ‘Riverdance” with the orchestra.
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019
In 2019 when the Fleadh came to Drogheda the choir and orchestra performed to a full house in the Dome with their unforgettable Riverdance and other pieces. They were privileged to be asked to play on the main stage on August 14th opening the show for the American well-known group Cherish the Ladies and there was even a guest appearance from Nathan Carter.. The choir and orchestra showed great commitment by practicing during the summer holidays for the Fleadh performance. We played alongside the talented Dónal Lunny and Zoe Conway in our own rendition of ‘Riverdance’. It was truly a memorable performance.
Annually, we perform on the steps of St. Peter’s Church on Suicide Awareness Day, the 10th of September. This year, 2019, we performed alongside the talented Amie Dyer. We sang songs such as “Angel”, “Forget Me Knots” and an original song “Unaccepted” written by one of our TY students. It is an honor to be able to perform for such an important cause and hopefully to make people feel like they are not alone.
Why the Choir is Important to Us
“The Greenhills choir is the heart and soul of the school. It helped me settle in in first year and I’ve been attending ever since. Everyone is so lovely – it’s not about talent, it’s about singing together! It’s not so easy to get to know people across the year groups but choir is a great opportunity to make so many friends of all ages” – A.S. 5th year student.
“Our school choir has really given me a sense of belonging in my school community. The music department in Greenhills is such a kind, loving, encouraging community and I wouldn’t know what I’d do without it. Singing with the choir has given me such confidence and has truly built me into the person I am today. Being in such a nice community here in the school has allowed me to form bonds with those in other years; those who I would not have even known existed without the choir” – C.C. 5th year student.
Our Own Song!!
Luckily, we have amazing music teachers that are just as enthusiastic about music as we are. This year we have been given the incredible opportunity to record a Christmas song that was composed by one of our very own teachers. The members of the music department worked extremely hard to make the finished product amazing and we all hope you enjoy the song when it is released in the coming weeks!
