Basketball: U16, Cadette B Team Go on Scoring Spree.
Three teams took to the court before heading off on mid-term break. On Monday two teams headed off to Killester, to play St. Mary’s. The U16, Cadette C team were first on the floor. The first half was nip and tuck as the teams traded baskets. A single pointed separated them at the half time, 13 – 14 to St. Mary’s. Rebecca McGrane was superb running the floor and scoring 8 points in the 2nd quarter. Quarter three did not go according to plan for the visitors as they failed to score as the home side notched up 10 points. They fought back in the final quarter outscoring their opponents 10 points to 6, with Sharon Popoola being particularly effective. However, the 2nd quarter did the damage and they lost out 24 – 30.

The 2nd match was the U19, Senior B team. Catherine Grey scored her squad’s first basket, but it was her defence on St. Mary’s top player that was worthy of note. The scores for the first two quarters were identical 4 – 5, with the home side leading 10 – 8 at the half time interval. The team got to grips with the small court in the 2nd half and the pace of the game increased. It was 18 points each at the end of the 3rd quarter with Niamh Burke picking off some nice rebounds. Point guard Abigail Woods was made work tirelessly as Killester pressed her full court, but this led to some excellent passes into Chantelle Gallagher under the basket. Gallagher scoring 6 of her teams 10 points in this quarter. Captain, Leah Bastianelli closed out the game with a final basket and the side won 28 – 21.

On Tuesday the U16, Cadette B team made the trip to Coolock to take on Mercy College. Unfortunately, the home side were very weak, with no basketball skills or knowledge. The Boynesiders ran out winners 54 – 2. Coach Rice was speaking to the Mercy Coach afterwards who said her players do not come training which begs the question why you would enter a team into this league as it was a pointless exercise for the travelling team and indeed demoralising for the home side.
