5 out of 5 Basketball Teams Qualify for Semi-Finals
The first half of the basketball season at Our Lady’s College has been very successful. 5 teams were competing between U19 and U16 and all five have qualified for the semi-finals in their respective leagues.
Last Thursday the U16 team, playing in the Premier Division had a top of the table clash with Maynooth Post Primary school. Both teams were unbeaten going into this game and awaiting the winner was the top spot in the league and the more favourable draw in the semi-final. Unfortunately, Maynooth arrived with only 6 players due to pressure of exams, and the ‘clash’ turned out to be more of a ‘crash’. Nikola Busa continued where she left off in her last game, hitting 7 points of her teams 15 points, leaving them 15-10 up. They led 28-19 at the half time interval, but the damage was done in the second half. Maynooth had to be careful with fouls, and this coupled with them tiring, did not help their cause. Gretta McEvoy was not only controlling things from the point guard spot, but was also a demon in defence, and finished on a season high of 20 points. The final score was a comfortable 66 – 31 victory to the home side. They now join the U19A, U19B, U16B and U16C teams in semi-finals. As the U19 teams are playing in the same division, different sections, it is looking very likely they will play each other in the semis as the A team finished on top and the B side finished 2nd. A similar fate awaits the U16B & U16C teams.
