2nd Year Team Bounce Into Basketball League Action

This week it was the turn of St. Mary’s, Glasnevin to come to Our Lady’s College with two basketball teams.  Making their 2018 league debut was the 2nd Year B Team, playing in Division 2.  Captain, Rebecca Tully led from the front and had her side 4 – 0 up at the 1st break.  In quarter two a different 5 players take to the court, and Nada Totilaite opened her account, also scoring 4 points.  There were several missed opportunities in both quarters, but the home side led 8 – 4 at the half time interval.  St. Mary’s came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders in the 3rd quarter and hit four unanswered baskets, leaving the ‘College’ two points down going into the final 7 minutes.  Tully added a further basket to her tally, but this was their only score as they struggled to get past a much bigger St. Mary’s, who went on to win 23 – 10.

The home side missed some simple rebounds and lay-ups and were hoping these would not come back to bit them later in the game.  The exact scores were reversed in the 2nd quarter leaving the score tied at 11 points each.  Thankfully, in quarter three they got into their stride, scoring 13 points while keeping Glasnevin scoreless.  Eimear Clarke, Garoa Villaverde and Lynn Victory were tireless in defence and deserved of a mention.  Sinead Lewin scored a final basket on the buzzer and the side were victorious, 29 – 16.  With one game remaining in their league campaign they sit at the top, unbeaten and are now assured of a top four spot.
