2nd Year Basketball Teams Bounce Into Action for 2019-20 Season.

Tuesday saw the U19B, division 1 team and the 2nd Year B, division 2 team travel to St. Dominic’s in Cabra.  The U19’s played first and after a dismal display, in a game where the league leaders could not ‘buy’ a basket, the final whistle sounded with the teams tied at 14 points each.  3 minutes of overtime ensued in which neither team scored.  A further 3 minutes of extra time followed.  Both sides left it till the last minute to register a basket, with Cabra being the first on the sheet.  Their foul count carried over from the 4th quarter and all resulting fouls put Our Lady’s on the line.  Rachel Beirth scored one of her 2 free-throws; Eimear Clarke also scored one of her 2 to level the game once again.  It looked like another period of extra time, when Lynn Victory was fouled with 6 seconds on the clock.  On this occasion one point was enough to win and they recorded an ‘epic’ victory, 17 – 16.  On the plus side this leaves them on top of the league going into the Christmas break and a place in the semi-finals.

TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Shona Bradley; Benita Assoua; Rachel Beirth 3; Eimear Clarke 6; Niamh Cullen; Caoimhe Doherty; Chantelle Gallagher; Catherine Grey; Katie McCabe (not available); Josephine Ogbanga 2; Keelin O’Reilly (not available) and Lynn Victory 6.

The 2nd Year B team were taking to the floor for the first time this season.  They travelled with only 9 players, as one player failed to arrive that morning.  This put pressure on the team as they need 5 for the 1st quarter & 5 for the 2nd quarter, which meant the opposing Coach would pick one player from the 1st quarter to play in the 2nd.  They had a great 1st quarter, leading 8-2 at the break.  Captain, Leisha Archbold and Queen Agunloye sharing the spoils.  Unfortunately, at the start of the 2nd quarter, one of the players was unwell and we had to give the game to St. Dominic’s.  The remaining players finished the game and won 31-11 on the day but the points went to Cabra.  They will regroup over the next few weeks and perhaps look at adding to the squad.  Every credit to the players on the day as they worked so hard for each other.

TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Leisha Archbold 5; Queen Agunloye 4; Katie Connolly (no show); Emily Fitzpatrick; Liana Karkle 8; Aine Marron; Abbey McDonnell 4; Sarah McGrath 4; Sophie McNally 4 and Kuhle Mdlalo 2.

On Thursday it was Cabra’s turn to travel Boyneside with another two teams.  This time the 2nd Year A, division 1 team and U16B, division 2 teams would do battle.  The 2nd year game was first and they found themselves 0-5 down at the 1st quarter.  They won the 2nd quarter 8-6, leaving them trailing by 3 going into the 2nd half.  2 points separated the teams, for most of the final quarter.  St. Dominic’s had one excellent Club player who showed her dominance in the final 2 minutes, and they took this one from the home side 23-13.

TEAM & SCORES: Captain, Jessica Carron 2; Jessica Carr; Sadhbh Clinton 2; Katie Dawson (not available); Erin Kearney (injured); Evie Kirwan; Amelia Lawrence 2; Kate McDermott; Kiera McWilliams; Joy Mooney 6; Sheila Whyte and Eabha Woods 1.

Last team out for the week was the U16B team.  Looking to bounce back after their defeat the previous week, the side wasted no time in taking control, and led 10-4 at the break.  Grace Woods was in flying form, scoring 6 points in this quarter.  St. Dominic’s fought back and tipped the scales in the 2nd quarter 7 points to 6.  However, Our Lady’s took control in the 3rd quarter and scored 19 points to put the game beyond their opponents.  Katie Ryan and Alma Harrak were fighting for scores, but it was Grace Woods day as she scored 15 points for her team, to take the win 49-26.  This win put them in 2nd place in the League and a place in the semi-finals after the Christmas break.
