2nd Year A Basketball Team Secure Final Spot

2nd Year A Team

With the 1st and 2nd Year basketball leagues near completion date, three teams were in action during the week.  The 2nd Year B side, playing in Division 2, took on Dominican College, Griffith Avenue on home soil.  The girls got a great start, Queen Agunloye scoring 7 of her teams 11 points in the 1st quarter.  Dominican managed 4 points in this quarter but failed to register a score in the next one.  Captain, Leisha Archbold, once again leading from the front, scoring both from open play and the free throw line.  The team lead 20-4 by the half time break.  Emily Fitzpatrick and Sophie McNally were fighting it out in the second half for scores, McNally running the floor and Fitzpatrick rebounding strongly.  Dominican had no reply and the victory went to the Boynesiders, 38-9.  This now solidifies them firmly at the top of their section, and a guaranteed spot in the semi-finals.

Wednesday the 1st year A team took on St. Mary’s, Baldoyle also on home turf.  The team started nervously, which is out of character for them, and they made hard work of the 1st quarter, but still led 6-2. Sarah Bäck-Herke was dominant under the boards and scored 4 points with Lily Sheeran chipping in with the other 2.  The 5 players in the next quarter failed to lift the game and only managed a single basket.  St. Mary’s outscoring them in this one by a single point.  It was a low scoring 1st half, only 8 point to 3 registered on the board.  In the 2nd half they started to get to grips with the bigger and physically stronger Baldoyle team.  Aoife Kane and Leah McElearney lighting up the court on their introduction.  The side hit 8 points and held the visitors to a basket.  Eili Ryan stole the 4th quarter with an energetic display at both ends of the floor, while also finishing as top scorer on 6 points.  They ran out winners in the end 28-9, but the score line not reflecting the difficulty of the game in parts.  With one game remaining in the league campaign, they too sit pretty at the top of Section 1 in division 2.
